The short answer: usually no.
For most skin types, tallow is non-comedogenic. The reason has nothing to do with comedogenic ratings published in the 1980s — those tests were done on rabbit ears using pure ingredients at unrealistic concentrations. The reason has to do with sebum similarity.
Your sebaceous glands secrete a mix of triglycerides, wax esters, free fatty acids, and squalene. Grass-fed beef tallow's fatty-acid profile is one of the closest matches to that mix in nature. When your skin recognizes a moisturizer as 'self,' it doesn't trigger the inflammatory cascade that creates clogged pores.
Why some people still react.
A small percentage of users do report initial breakouts when switching to tallow. There are usually three causes: a purging phase as actives are flushed from the pore lining, sensitivity to a specific essential oil in scented variants, or sourcing — non-grass-fed tallow has a less skin-similar profile and can sit on the skin differently.
If you're acne-prone, start with our Unscented Whipped Tallow. It's just two ingredients (organic grass-fed tallow and organic jojoba oil), with no essential oils to react to.
How to tell if tallow is working for your skin.
- 01
Days 1–7
Skin feels softer, more comfortable. Barrier markers like tightness and redness begin to fade.
- 02
Days 7–14
Sebum production tends to balance — oily skin feels less shiny, dry skin less tight.
- 03
Days 14–28
Tone and texture improve. If you're going to break out, this is the window — and it usually resolves with continued use.
- 04
Day 28+
Your skin has completed a full cycle on tallow. By now you'll know whether it's working.
Frequently Asked
Questions, answered.
Is tallow comedogenic?+
For most skin types, no. Grass-fed beef tallow's fatty-acid profile mirrors human sebum, which is why it's typically non-comedogenic — even for combination and oily skin.
Why do I sometimes hear that tallow breaks people out?+
Three reasons account for the majority of reports: a brief purging phase, sensitivity to essential oils in scented variants, or low-quality non-grass-fed tallow. Starting with an unscented, grass-fed product almost always resolves it.
How long should I wait to judge whether tallow is breaking me out?+
Give it a full 28-day skin cycle. Most reactivity that shows up in week one resolves by week three with consistent use.
